Catherine and Mike

On Friday 26 June, Moretonhampstead Parish Council hosted a special community celebration to recognise an extraordinary milestone: 50 years of continuous service by Cllr Mike Jeffery.

The event brought together councillors, friends, colleagues, former council members, and representatives from local organisations to honour Mike’s remarkable contribution to the town. Held at the Community Club, the evening included refreshments, displays of historic photographs, and the presentation of a handcrafted commemorative plate created by local artist Michael Edwards and potter Penny Simpson.

Five Decades of Parish Service

Mike first joined Moretonhampstead Parish Council in 1976 and has served ever since. Over those five decades, he has provided steady leadership, deep local knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to the community. He served as Chair in 1982 and has been a trusted voice through periods of change, major projects, and the evolving needs of the parish.

His long service has offered continuity to successive councils, and his fairness, diligence, and wise counsel have earned him the respect of colleagues across local government.

A Lifetime of Public Service

Mike’s contribution extends far beyond the Parish Council.

  • -He served 24 years as a District Councillor, ensuring Moretonhampstead had a strong voice in wider decision‑making.
  • He spent more than 20 years as a Member of the Dartmoor National Park Authority, helping shape policy that protects the landscape, heritage, and communities of Dartmoor.
  • Many residents will also know him from his 37 years in the retained Fire Service, where he provided essential emergency cover to a rural area where response times can be critical.

Through these roles, Mike has helped influence planning, conservation, community safety, and local governance across the region.

Voluntary Work and Community Leadership

Alongside his formal roles, Mike has given countless hours to voluntary and community projects.

  • He played a hands‑on part in the construction of Moretonhampstead swimming pool, working alongside volunteers including his father.
  • He served as a school governor for over 40 years, supporting generations of local children.
  • He has shared his expertise in Dartmoor’s industrial archaeology, leading guided walks that have helped residents and visitors understand the history and landscape of the moor.
  • He has supported local heritage as a bell ringer and contributed to charitable work through the Lucy Wills Trust.
  • He continues to share his practical skills — including woodturning and model making — through the Community Shed, helping others learn new crafts and supporting local projects.

Mike has also championed initiatives such as the Wray Valley Trail and efforts to support affordable housing for local people, reflecting his long‑standing commitment to community wellbeing.

A Fitting Celebration

The evening included a slideshow of photographs spanning five decades of service, from council meetings and community events to Fire Service memories and heritage projects. Guests shared stories, reflected on Mike’s contribution, and expressed their appreciation for his dedication.

The commemorative plate, designed and made in Moretonhampstead, was presented on behalf of the Parish Council as a symbol of gratitude for his exceptional service.

Thanks and Recognition

The Parish Council extends its sincere thanks to Mike for his outstanding dedication to Moretonhampstead, and to everyone who joined in marking this remarkable milestone. His commitment over half a century has helped shape the town’s identity, strengthen its community spirit, and inspire generations of residents.
