Public Consultation: Traffic Management Proposals for Moretonhampstead Town Centre

Moretonhampstead Parish Council is seeking views on traffic management for the town centre. Read the proposals and complete the survey to share your feedback. No decisions have been made and all options remain open.

Published: 31 March 2026

Moretonhampstead Parish Council is inviting residents, businesses and visitors to take part in a public consultation on a range of potential traffic management and public realm options for the town centre.
The purpose of the consultation is to gather views on whether changes are needed, which approaches—if any—are supported, and how any future proposals might affect people who live in, work in, or visit the town.
At this stage, no decisions have been made, no funding is secured, and no changes can be implemented without the approval of Devon County Council, who are the highway authority. The Parish Council is not expressing a preference for any option and will only consider progressing ideas if there is clear community support and a viable route to delivery.

What the Consultation Covers
The consultation sets out six possible approaches identified by a traffic engineer working with the Parish Council. These range from keeping the current layout to various forms of closure or partial closure of streets around The Square.
The options include:
Option 1: Carriageway narrowing / one‑way gyratory
Option 2: Closure of George Street
Option 3: Closure of New Street
Option 4: Full closure of The Square
Option 5: No change
Option 6: Current layout with more frequent event closures
Each option includes potential benefits and risks, such as impacts on pedestrian space, traffic flow, parking, access for larger vehicles, and the town centre environment. The consultation also seeks views on:
• Whether any changes should be permanent or trialled
• The possible use of an 18‑month Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO)
• 20mph limits
• Speed Indicator Devices (SID)
• Community Speedwatch
• Wider traffic concerns
The aim is to understand the full range of community views before any next steps are considered.
